I Live For You
The first single from our debut full-length LP. It is a love song addressed to the narrator’s online version of themself. It examines the phenomenon of social media, and questions the authenticity of peoples online personas as opposed to their day to day selves. Sonically it uses synthesizers to evoke the false nature of social media and samples camera noises to give the listener a sense of its narcissistic core. Influence has been taken from the works of Arcade Fire, Talking Heads and David Bowie.
“It’s a love letter from a person to the perfect version of themselves that exists on social media. It’s fair to say that all of us live our lives through the lens of social media, a world where we curate a perfect version of ourselves that is presented to the public. While there are many positive sides of social media there is also a dark side, seen in the rise of anxiety and self esteem issues associated with social media. The song explores the worst of these scenarios. In it, the protagonist is in love with the perfect version of themselves they have created and only does things in the real world to provide content for the “true” version of themselves. They seek validation online to justify their entire existence.”
In a world of cigarette ash Lines in the sand are drawn We're born just before the flash We are all things to everyone
So make me perfect, make me clean 'Cause it only matters if I am seen I am the author, I am a ghost You are the one thing that matters most I live for you
In a world that's built to last Numbers are all I need I give you the parts of me That I want you to see
So make louder, Let me be heard Show me the answer and I'll spread the word I am the author, I am a God You are the one thing that I need
I live for you (Always, forever) I live for you (Always and never)
'Cause everybody needs something to live for All that is sacred is reborn as a photograph So put it in a frame Frozen now, they live forever We recede and start again
This song is about feeling lost and disillusioned and imagining moving to Berlin as a way of escaping from problems by running away. It explores the themes of loneliness, belonging and change. The narrator has become fed up with their surroundings and fantasises about a new life in Berlin. They believe that just by moving away they will be able to throw off the shackles of their old life and start afresh, but whether the fantasy will become a reality remains to be seen. The faint, choral backing vocals toward the end of the track are singing the German word “Veranderung”, meaning change.
The feeling of falling Landless in the wake We took to the water
And it comes without warning Rising from the depths Of fear and devotion
And I remember the first time The perfume on my tongue I remember the last time
So who I am to say how this one will end? I'm just looking for a change A new place to begin So I'm moving to Berlin Just to get away I'm burning the pages And reading the flames
You keep writing it down Living on paper Falling down the same old streets and tributaries Learn to live with the doubt Keep stacking the days up Hoping all this must add up to something
Cause I can't keep living on coffee and good intent Drifting for hours my powers have all been spent
So who I am to say how this one will end? I'm just looking for a change A new place to begin So I'm moving to Berlin For a change of pace I'm cleaning my act up I'm changing my name
I'm moving to Berlin I'm building a pyre I'm burning my bridges And walking the wire I'm giving myself up I'm clipping my wings I'm growing a new face And shedding my skin
